Pensive Poem by MarySue Moss

Between May 1 and May 31 there are a handful of reasons to party
Mother’s Day,
Graduations,
(from
Preschool,
Kindergarten,
Eighth grade,
High school,
College
And/or nurses training)
And WEDDINGS.
Fifty years ago, Jerry and I were married on a May Saturday
In a week that celebrated four family graduations,
Including mine from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing.
Busy week, that.

I used to let May slip into June
With a picnic, a ball game, and a day off from work.
I thought Memorial Day trips to the cemetery
Were for old people visiting their even older deceased parents.
TODAY
There is a special piece of real estate in the northwest corner
Of the Brethren Cemetery
With five stones marking the Castle and Moss families
With resting place- dates starting in 2001 through 2015.
Our husbands didn’t quite make it to three score years and ten.
Our three children didn’t make it to thirty.
And so,
MAY,
I’ll give you the respect you deserve,
And honor the holiday you claim.
I will do the graduation parties
And celebrate 50 years from nurses’ training.
I will also shed a few tears over five memorial stones
That have all the freshness that a decade and a half can offer.
Welcome, May, you are a treasure.
